Villanova Alumnus, Augustinian Friar Elected as Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine
The Rev. Joseph L. Farrell, OSA, STL, STD, ’85 VSB, ’19 MS has been elected Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine at the Order’s 188th General Chapter on Sept. 9. Father Farrell, who will serve a six-year term, is the second Prior General elected from the Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova and 98th Prior General of the Order since the position was first assigned in 1256, shortly after its founding.

Pope Leo XIV, an Augustinian friar and Villanova alumnus, was honored with the Saint Augustine Medal by the Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova. The medal is the Province’s highest recognition, awarded to those who exemplify the spirit and teachings of St. Augustine through service, generosity and a deep commitment to Augustinian values.

ÃÛÌÒTV’s new 112-acre Cabrini Campus will open in August 2026, providing the opportunity for the University to enhance its programs and commitment to advancing Catholic higher education. This addition will support all aspects of campus life, providing a space that nurtures a true living and learning experience in Villanova’s Augustinian Catholic tradition.

The Spring 2025 digital edition of Villanova Magazine is now live. This issue’s cover story features a letter from Father Peter reflecting on the election of Pope Leo XIV—the first Augustinian pope. Also inside: a preview of plans for the new ÃÛÌÒTV Cabrini Campus; faculty reimagining the classroom experience; and how offices such as Learning Support Services and the Office of Access and Disability Services help each Villanovan thrive.
